Campground Partially Reopens

**Lone Pine, CA** - The Whitney Portal Campground in the Eastern Sierras Inyo National Forest has partially reopened, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The campground, which has been closed since August 2021 due to the Kearsarge Interagency Fire, has been partially reopened in two phases, with the first phase opening on June 15th, 2023 and the second phase opening on July 1st, 2023.

Reopening Details

The first phase of the reopening included the reopening of 22 campsites in the Upper Whitney Portal Campground and 2 group campsites. The second phase of the reopening included the reopening of the remaining 28 campsites in the Upper Whitney Portal Campground and 7 group campsites.

Reservations and Information

Campers are advised to make reservations in advance through the Recreation.gov website or by calling (877) 444-6777. Visitors are reminded to recreate responsibly and to follow all fire restrictions and safety guidelines.

  • The Whitney Portal Store and the Whitney Portal Hostel are also open.
  • The Whitney Trail is open, but hikers are advised to check current conditions before出发.
