14-Year-Old Harris Wolobah Died Hours After Consuming the Chip

Paqui Chips are Made by Amplify Snack Brands, a Subsidiary of the Hershey Company

A medical examiner has confirmed the cause of death for a 14-year-old boy who died after participating in Paqui's One Chip Challenge. Harris Wolobah, a 10th grader from Worcester, Massachusetts, died on Sept. 1, 2023, hours after eating the chip.

According to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, Wolobah's death was ruled an accident due to choking on food. The chip is made with the Carolina Reaper pepper, one of the hottest peppers in the world. Paqui Chips are made by Amplify Snack Brands, a subsidiary of the Hershey Company.

About a week after Wolobah's death, the company said it was "deeply saddened" by the news and that it was "working with the appropriate authorities to investigate the matter."
